It’s that day of the year. Several thousands of subway riders taking off their pants. It’s the annual No Pants Subway Ride in NYC! It happened not only in New York, but in several locations around the world.

The no pants Subway right is a yearly tradition since 2002. The group of No Pants Subway Riders has grown steady. More than 60 cities in 25 countries had people riding the subway today leaving their pants. While they had seven riders in 2002, there are in New York alone this year over 4,000.

It’s about humor, it’s about the scenes this causes. At about 3 PM this afternoon the riders met in seven different locations. They gathered in Astoria, Brooklyn, downtown Manhattan, the lower East side, Queens, at Central Park, and in Williamsburg. They received a briefing, and left for the subway. Once on the train, they took off their pants and acted as if nothing happened. Following the instructions, all of the participants ended up (some after a transfer) in the Union Square station on Manhattan.  More than 4,000 people ended up here that way.

I left from the Bushwick location, in Brooklyn. We gathered in the Maria Hernandez Park. Dimon from Improv Everywhere gave clear and brief instructions, and the 150 or so people here walked to the subway in 8 groups, one per car on the L-train. The short briefing made sure that all participants understood the model and could help to create maximal impact on the other travelers. Even after this event going on now for 14 years, people still react extremely puzzled  when a guy or girl with no pants enters the subway cart.

Improv everywhere, led by Charlie Todd, founder of the organization. organizes this yearly event, in the winter to maximize its effect. The No Pants Subway Ride may then be one of their best-known events: they organize several dozens of other scenes every year in New York and other cities. Not only the no pants Subway right, but also several other events that take place in New York and other cities. Every summer for example they have the MP3-experiment that brings out thousands of people who follow the instructions of a pre-recorded MP3.

The NYPD has learned that this is normal. A couple of years ago they arrested some of the riders. But riding with no pants is not illegal in NYC.
