Currently, New York is in the midst of near blizzard conditions. The temperatures have dropped, and on top an ice cold wind makes the wind chill temperature (as we feel it) under 0ºF (that’s about -20ºC). That makes the water in the Hudson river freeze on the top layer, and accumulate. the string winds pushes all this ice towards the Manhattan side of the river, and the pack is rapidly floating downstream. While the ice was 5 yards wide at 9:30 am, we now (12pm) have approximately 25 yards of ice.
Today, at around 11:15, a ferry operated by Liberty Landing Ferry Service got stuck in the ice on the Hudson. A ferry from a competing company made a detour towards the stranded ferry, that eventually got freed and returned to where it came from. We reached out to the company and will update the post when more information becomes available.
