The Halloween Parade in the West Village is one of those moments in the year where New York shows you something you can’t experience elsewhere.
Groups have been working since months to create their perfect creature or car. When they make the parade, they are joined by over 50,000 people in costume that give this parade that little (hmm) extra. The crowd shows up hours before the parade starts.
The most interesting man of the world, a promotional character by beer brand Dos Equis is this years patron of the parade.
The organization relies on volunteers. The Halloween parade team works a whole year in making this one of the top attractions in new York city. Jeanne Fleming, a seasoned event director, manages the production.
At 7PM, the parade starts walking up 6th avenue, towards 16th street. It takes till far after 9pm before all artists and the participants have started, and only after 11PM the Halloween parade is over. Every year more people are part.
Halloween the way it is celebrated in New York is pretty different from how I see it in other places. The combination of Halloween, Carnaval and a Gay Pride Parade make the Halloween Parade a unique event.
